sharon_gscott One of the things I love about living on the Eastside is that there's always something going on. You don't have to travel far to find a festival, live music, great food, or somewhere new to explore. Here are a few events that caught my eye this week: • Alki Art Fair — Browse local artists, listen to live music, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy some of the best views of the Seattle skyline. • Kirkland Uncorked — Washington wines, local restaurants, waterfront views, and live entertainment all weekend long. • Sequim Lavender Festival — If you've never been, this is worth the drive. Lavender fields in full bloom, farm tours, shopping, and a charming street fair. • Seafair Indian Days Powwow — Experience traditional dancing, drumming, Native art, and food at Discovery Park. • CID Celebration — Celebrate the many cultures of Seattle's Chinatown–International District with performances, food vendors, and activities throughout the neighborhood. • King County Fair — Carnival rides, farm animals, rodeo events, and all the classic fair food in Enumclaw. • Blastfest at Seattle Center — A weekend of music featuring artists and cultures from around the world. Pacific Northwest summers always seem to fly by. Pick an event, grab someone you enjoy spending time hanging out with, and make the most of your weekend!

sharon_gscott It’s that time of year again—the weekend in July that really anchors summer for me. It never disappoints me either! First comes the Fourth of July. Then my son’s birthday is on the 7th, and right behind it is Mercer Island’s Summer Celebration. It's famous in my mind. It's homespun, it's local and it is really cool! The parade starts Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at SE 27th Street and 78th Avenue SE, then travels north on 78th and finishes at Mercerdale Park. From there, the crowd usually splits in two. Some meander over to Mercerdale Field for the circus and kids zone, foam party, bubbles, music, and games. Others head toward the art vendors and community booths, where you’ll find a little bit of everything—jam, honey, jewelry, clothing, and plenty of "in between." There are the food vendors and food trucks, depending on just how hungry you are. The daytime fun runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Warning: Rest up and get ready for round two. The evening starts at 6:00 p.m. at Luther Burbank Park with live music, stilt walkers, and food trucks. The fireworks begin at 10:00 p.m. They are impressive. They are powerful. They will probably set off a few car alarms, and yes, they are worth staying up for. The Fun is Here: Luther Burbank Park 2040 84th Avenue SE Mercer Island Warning number two: Get there early. Parking is limited, though free shuttles run from Northwood and Island Park elementary schools from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. Limited paid parking is also available at the Mercer Island Community & Event Center. One important note: Summer Celebration is Saturday only this year—there are no Sunday hours. The full event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. This is one of those Mercer Island traditions that makes summer feel official. Hope to see you out there. Psst. Sunscreen (duh.)
